Mia Wasikowska is Jane Eyre

When we first met Mia Wasikowska to talk about Alice in Wonderland, news had broke that the actress was cast to play the title role in Jane Eyre. Before any discussion of anything Alice, there were many congratulations on Wasikowska’s Jane Eyre casting coup. Her excitement for the part was palpable.

Now, SheKnows sits across from Mia Wasikowska for another video interview, this time for the release of Jane Eyre, out in theaters March 11. She is still a picture of pride, but there is also a layer of accomplishment. And she should be all of the above as Wasikowska shines as the title character from the iconic Charlotte Bronte novel.

Jane Eyre stars Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska

Jane Eyre is equally about the limits forced on women by societal mores in another century as it is a sweeping romance that proves that love does not come easy, regardless of the era.

Wasikowska, after stellar performances in The Kids Are All Right and Alice in Wonderland, would make Bronte proud. She has accomplished so much in her telling of the Jane Eyre story. Mia chats up her Jane Eyre experience including the chance to star opposite Oscar winner Judi Dench and Michael Fassbender -- who stars as Edward Rochester. Fassbender is beyond scorching right now with his casting in X-Men: First Classas Magneto and his searing turn in Jane Eyre.

Tackling a literary classic for a big screen adaptation is a heady effort. Just ask Jane Eyre director Cary Joji Fukunaga.

For one, locations so impeccably described by author Charlotte Bronte in her classic novel are few and far between in 2011 England.

Judi Dench and Mia Wasikowska in Jane Eyre

One of Fukunaga's easiest tasks was the casting of an actress to inhabit the literary legend, Jane Eyre.

Fukunaga had Mia Wasikowska in his sights for Jane from the beginning.

The Jane Eyre director takes us through his process of bringing a Bronte sister mainstay to the big screen. Adding Oscar winner Judi Dench into the mix could never hurt things.

In fact, the dynamic between Dench and Wasikowska has us begging for more movies featuring the two actresses as they showcased flawless cinema chemistry in Jane Eyre.

Cary Joji Fukunaga also sheds light on some English movie history.

Some of Jane Eyre's locales have been previously used. But, where and in what?

Jane Eyre stars Mia Wasikowska in the title role and it is a character Wasikowska was born to play. Not even old enough to drink in the U.S., Wasikowska is already showing her acting prowess by tackling some of English literature’s greatest figures.

First, she wowed as Alice in Alice in Wonderland and now Mia Wasikowska astounds as the titular character in Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre stars Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender

Jane Eyre circa 2011 is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and is impeccably cast. Fukunaga has woven a tale using Charlotte Bronte's classic story framework and given movie audiences something to cheer about as the film truly kicks off Oscar awards buzz for the new year.

Jane Eyre's story is one that many women endured during the time period of the 1800s. With little options and parents who left her orphaned, Jane is brought up in a charity school and then finds work as a nanny of sorts for the brooding Mr. Rochester . Immediately, there is a coy attraction between the two that ever-so-slowly develops to a romance over the course of the film.

Why Jane Eyre also works so well is the manner in which the tale is told. The story moves forward as flashbacks clue the audience into Jane's past and how she came to be the way she is and also where she is residing. At Mr. Rochester's estate, she meets the head of the household, Mrs. Fairfax . The scenes between Dench and Wasikowska are priceless. It is a gift to witness the excellence of the veteran actress paired with the up-and-coming acting prowess of Wasikowska.

At the core of Jane Eyre is the romance, but this is no bright light romance. Jane lives a difficult life and with her options so limited, through Wasikowska's performance, we keenly feel her sense of personal uncertainty as to her place in the world. When she is shocked by a discovery in Mr. Rochester's home, she flees and is once again alone without hope. Taken in by a minister and his sisters, Jane takes up teaching at the church school and begins to carve out a life that is solely her own.

As Jane Eyre is mostly a romance, the chemistry between the leads needs to be electric and it is. Michael Fassbender adds to his building film resume after a stellar turn in Inglourious Basterds and in the highly-anticipated, upcoming X-Men: First Class. In Jane Eyre, he joins Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice as setting the standard for a classic British literature role. After Fassbender's performance as Mr. Rochester, we can't imagine anyone else in the role…ever!

Mia Wasikowska is Jane Eyre

And then there's Wasikowska. A joy to watch, her power as Jane Eyre pops off the screen. The actress has a subtle strength to her that shines in roles such as the title character in Charlotte Bronte's classic. There's a power and grace to Wasikowska that is impeccable as Jane Eyre, no wonder there was so much buzz when news broke that she was cast.

Jane Eyre, from beginning to end, is a blissful movie experience. Rarely does a period piece deliver its power on so many levels. The costumes are exquisite and the cinematography is beautiful while capturing the brooding, gothic feel of the novel. Fukunaga has crafted a Jane Eyre for the 21st century that will stand the test of time as much as the Bronte book. It is the definitive Jane Eyre film.

January Jones' baby daddy is married?

$

Is the real reason actress January Jones won't identify the father of her baby due to the fact that he's married? If Jones' baby daddy is a married man, it looks like the Mad Men star is doing a good job of keeping his identity a secret.

January Jones

Who's the father of pregnant Mad Men actress January Jones' baby? That's the question everyone's been asking since the beautiful blonde got knocked up.

Initial reports suspected that her most recent ex-boyfriend, Saturday Night Live's Jason Sudeikis, was the dad, and Jones had decided to raise the baby by herself.

But, it turns out, the reason Jones has been so tight-lipped about who impregnated her is because he's a married man!

Supposedly, the father-in-question and Jones worked together on X-Men: First Class. The male lineup of actors in the movie includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon. Of course, there's the male crew to consider, too.

For those who ruled out any possible candidates based on the fact that he's married, you'll have to guess again.

As The Daily notes, Jones announced her pregnancy on April 28. She'd been photographed holding large purses placed strategically over her stomach up to that date, and not long after, she showed off her growing baby bump for all to see.

"She's really looking forward to this new chapter in her life as a single mom," her rep stated, which made it sound like Jones had chosen to go it alone. Now it looks like she may have been deflecting attention from her baby's father because if his identity goes public, it could break up his marriage.

X-Men: First Class' Kevin Bacon and January Jones dish being bad

Kevin Bacon and January Jones are the baddest of the bad in X-Men: First Class and sat down in New York City recently for an exclusive video interview to chat about what it means to be bad.

Kevin Bacon and January Jones

When we walk into Kevin Bacon and January Jones' suite at the Ritz Carlton Central Park, it is immediately clear these two have chemistry. Bacon is making sure the pregnant Jones is comfortable, complete with a chair to rest her feet upon. It is a far cry from the evil embodied that the duo portray in the new film X-Men: First Class.

Bacon is Sebastian Shaw, also known as Dr. Schmidt, the foil for our burgeoning heroes that will become the X-Men. It is established early in the film that he is downright wicked when he first encounters Michael Fassbender's Erik Lehnsherr in a Nazi concentration camp.

His partner in crime, Jones, portrays Emma Frost -- a character willing to do almost anything to ensure Bacon's evil plan is seen through to fruition. Together, the dastardly duo wreaks havoc on the early 1960s world and brings the United States and the U.S.S.R. to the brink of World War III.

X-Men: First Class takes the franchise back to the beginning, before there was the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. James McAvoy is simply Charles and Fassbender is only Erik and by the end of the film, their growth into Xavier and Magneto will be complete.

The X-Men franchise is headed in a new direction -- reverse. The latest installment of the film series is called X-Men: First Class and it’s a prequel. It’s set in the 1960s and centers on a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr . If you’re a little dusty on your X-Men history and you have no idea what to expect, here are a few things you should know.

Charles and Erik are friends in X-Men: First Class. In the previous movies, they've always been on opposing sides but still shared a mutual respect for each other. First Class explains where that camaraderie came from and Erik's influence on the future X-Men team.

Kevin Bacon and January Jones in X-Men: First Class

The First Class lineup has changed. As you can see from the trailers, the original members of the first X-Men aren't all featured. The only student who appears in both the comic version of First Class and the movie is Henry "Beast" McCoy .

Kevin Bacon's in this film! He's barely shown in the trailers but Kevin Bacon is one of the main bad guys in the movie named Sebastian Shaw. He's one to watch along with Mad Men star January Jones who plays Emma Frost.

There are a lot of fresh yet familiar faces in this movie. Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence plays Raven Darkholme , Zoe Kravitz stars as Angel Salvadore and Caleb Landry Jones appears as Sean Cassidy .

If you're a bit of a history buff, you might respect how the plot ties in with the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960s. It plays a huge part in the storyline and the film even features archival footage of President John F. Kennedy.

X-Men: First Class also stars Rose Byrne, who appeared on the TV series Damages with Glenn Close, and Jason Flemyng, who's starred in his fair share of Guy Ritchie movies. First Class has a lot to offer and this info is just the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot more where this came from.

X-Men: First Class opens in theaters everywhere on June 3.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy: The X-Men speak

Ask any actor, much less two UK-trained actors in Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, to re-inhabit the roles originated by British thespian legends Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and one might pause. But, that is not what Fassbender and McAvoy did when they leapt at the chance to play Magneto and Professor Xavier in X-Men: First Class.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have met us for an exclusive video interview at the Ritz Carlton Central Park in New York City and they seem more mates than mutants with different takes on how to have the world discover their existence as is the case in X-Men: First Class.

Michael Fassbender in X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class is set against the backdrop of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis when the United States and the Soviet Union came as close as they ever would to full nuclear war. The film suggests that fictionally, of course, it was mutants who started it and mutants that stopped it.

McAvoy and Fassbender give us exclusive insight into their thought process behind tackling two iconic roles in the comic book to movie universe.

James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class

When movie audiences first discovered X-Men in 2000, McKellen and Stewart were Magneto and Professor Xavier, polar opposites on the role of mutants in a world of humans. Stewart's Professor X sought a compatriot nature with them while McKellen's Magneto sought to destroy humans before they extinguished the ever-growing mutant nation. With McAvoy and Fassbender's turn as the two mutant leaders, audiences discover a time when the two were close friends and the results are an acting clinic put on by both thespians.

X-Men: First Class has fans abuzz and with good reason. The X-Men franchise gets a reboot of sorts with the latest film starring James McAvoy as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as the man who would become Magneto.

We would be remiss without starting with the astonishing work of Michael Fassbender. The actor wowed in Jane Eyreearlier this year and proves he is a talented force of nature as he tackles the role of Erik Lehnsherr, who becomes Magneto after meeting up with his fellow mutants led by Professor Xavier . Fassbender gives the pop culture legend a depth unseen in both page and screen.

X-Men: First Class has arrived

Kevin Bacon is an everyman whom audiences pull for regardless of the film, from Footloose to Frost/Nixon. Yet in X-Men: First Class, he personifies evil incarnate. Bacon has always excelled in every single one of his roles, but in X-Men, he devours the screen inhabiting a character bent on world destruction.

X-Men: When Charles met Erik

When the film commences, director Michael Vaughn gives us the only background we need in a scene echoed in earlier X-Men films, with Erik Lehnsherr in a Nazi concentration camp as a young boy forcibly separated from his parents. The emotional turmoil that ensues is what first clues audiences into the fact that this character has supernatural powers. Meanwhile in America, a young Charles Xavier realizes he is not alone in his own gifts that defy reality.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class

Where Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men movies, went for gloss, in X-Men: First Class, director Vaughn brings emotional power that comes with an attachment to characters that are equally deep and delicious. The earlier X-Men films presented the world as a given, whereas this latest incarnation delivers mystery, mayhem, sizzling suspense from beginning to end and, most importantly, a palette of character colors that run the gamut.

The big question on many a moviegoer's mind is whether this film is more than a geek fantasy come to life. Is X-Men: First Class a popcorn summer movie franchise simply trying to reboot? Hardly... it fires on all cylinders, forgetting completely in the most delightful of ways that it's a genre film.

The creative team behind it, accompanied by a stellar cast operating at their best, have produced a movie worthy of the must-see title, regardless of the season of its release -- summer, winter or otherwise!

There is no weak link in X-Men: First Class, yet we do wish there was more for Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence's Raven/Mystique to utilize her vast talents. The new star of The Hunger Gamesand ingenue from Winter's Bone has the tough task of, in many ways, centering the film. Lawrence's character represents the good that mutant power can provide to humanity and the feeling that humans may choose to destroy or disintegrate them once the mutants' presence on earth is discovered.

Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men: First Class

The backdrop of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis adds a layer of suspense, realism and groundedness that only enhances Vaughn's storytelling. Whether a potential for a history lesson or a simple backdrop for a blockbuster, taking the X-Men characters back to the beginning circa 1962 is a stroke of genius. Two superpowers had their weapons of mass destruction pointed at each other. The reality that the world could end was palpable. X-Men: First Class navigates this landscape by both paying tribute to another time while simultaneously sending off a franchise on the cusp of a resonant rebirth.

X-Men: First Class is the rare film in a franchise that could easily be seen as its best when it is the latest. Between the questions that get answered , the film is a fortune trove of information meets thrilling plot for fans and newbies alike.

Who was snubbed by the SAG nominations?

The Screen Actors Guild recently announced their 2012 nominees. Unfortunately, they gave some top-tier talent the cold shoulder. Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Rooney Mara are just a few of the talented individuals who were snubbed by their peers.

Ryan Gosling

Wednesday morning, the Screen Actors Guild unveiled their nominees for this year's best performances in film and television. The theme for the 2012 ceremony must be girl power because The Help and Bridesmaids led pack in nominations.

We're extremely excited about SAG's love for the ladies, but we couldn't help but notice a few omissions. Here are five of the biggest shut-outs missing from this year's list.

Michael Fassbender: Michael Fassbender has had an amazing year. He's managed to appear in five films, with the most daring and provocative being Steve McQueen's Shame. His performance is raw, emotional and brutally honest. If anyone deserves a nomination for acting, it's him.

Ryan Gosling: Like Fassbender, Ryan Gosling has had a busy 12 months. He starred in three films including Drive, where he plays an unlikely hero who takes on a local mobster. He also turned in stellar performances in the political drama The Ides of March and the comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. Gosling has proven time and time again that he's one of the most talented actors of his generation. Unfortunately, the Screen Actors Guild has failed to see that.

Rooney Mara: Rooney Mara tackles the role of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and completely owns it. When her casting was initially announced, many doubted her ability to play such a dark and complex character. But she proved critics wrong and holds her own against several of her veteran co-stars. Hopefully, other award shows will give her the recognition she deserves.

Kristen Wiig: The cast of Bridesmaids received a Best Ensemble nod, but Kristen Wiig got no love in the Female Lead Actor category. Breakout star Melissa McCarthy earned a nomination for best supporting, but Wiig was hung out to dry. Not only was she the film's headliner but she also co-wrote the screenplay. Wiig is the heart and soul of that movie.

Homeland: On the television front, no one got it worse than Showtime's Homeland. The drama has been frequently called 2011's best new series , but it received nothing from SAG. At the very least, Claire Danes should have been nominated for her amazing performance as CIA officer Carrie Mathison. The entire cast delivers strong performances each week, but it looks like their best work wasn't good enough.

Who do you think received the biggest snub from SAG this year?

Top 10 breakout stars of 2011

It's that time again. We're counting down the top 10 breakout stars of 2011. This year, we met some Australian knockouts, a funny favorite and a few critical darlings. These former underdogs are giving Hollywood veterans a run for their money.

Shailene Woodley

10. Shailene Woodley

Prior to 2011, Shailene Woodley was already a star among teens. She headlines the ABC Family drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager, where she plays a high school student and young mother. While she gained plenty of attention for her work on the show, Woodley's performance in The Descendants is what really caught Hollywood's eye. It earned her a Golden Globe nomination and the Spotlight Award at the Hollywood Film Festival. The sky is the limit for this 20-year-old.

Joel Edgerton

 9. Joel Edgerton

After working his way up the indie later, Joel Edgerton finally snagged some major Hollywood roles. This year, he appeared in the prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing and also starred in the critical hit Warrior. But his biggest accomplishment was landing the coveted role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The native Aussie will be rubbing elbows with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, which isn't a bad way to start 2012.

Elizabeth Olsen

8. Elizabeth Olsen

Despite her famous siblings Mary Kate and AshleyElizabeth Olsen has successfully stepped out on her own. She made her feature film debut in this year's Martha Marcy May Marlene, in which she plays a young woman who escapes a cult and tries to re-enter society. Her performance earned rave reviews and has made her a serious Best Actress Oscar contender. Elizabeth Olsen is the real deal.

Tom Hiddleston

7. Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston proves that it's good to be bad. The British import exploded onto U.S. screens last summer as Loki, the god of mischief in Marvel's Thor. The actor will reprise the role for 2012's The Avengers, and possibly Thor 2. Not only can Hiddleston tackle blockbusters, but he can handle drama as well. This year, he played an adulterer in Terence Davies The Deep Blue Sea and a soldier in Steven Spielberg's War Horse.

Octavia Spencer

 6. Octavia Spencer

As a whole, The Help had one of the year's most impressive casts. There were several standouts including Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer. Prior to the film, Spencer mostly appeared in bit parts that didn't allow her to stretch her acting muscles. But once she was cast as Minny in Tate Taylor's '60s drama, the world became her stage. Spencer had the right attitude and delivery to make Minny memorable. Hollywood is finally taking note.

Rooney Mara

 5. Rooney Mara

Who knew the co-ed from The Social Network had it in her? Rooney Mara went from the girl-next-door to a motorcycle-riding-goth in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The actress submerged herself in the role of Lisbeth Salander to deliver a raw and engaging performance. Mara has proven that she's more than just a pretty face. Since wrapping Dragon Tattoo, she's scored parts in both Kathryn Bigelow and Terrence Malick's upcoming films. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Chris Hemsworth

4. Chris Hemsworth

There must be something in the water of Australia. The second Aussie to make our list is 28-year-old Chris Hemsworth. The musclebound actor played the title character in Thor, where he shared the screen with Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins. After the film's blockbuster success, he landed a co-headlining role in Snow White and the Huntsman and also finished production on The Avengers. Overall, he has five films scheduled for 2012, including the long-awaited thriller The Cabin in the Woods.

Melissa McCarthy

3. Melissa McCarthy

Talk about a long time coming. Melissa McCarthy is no stranger to the small screen. She played Sookie on Gilmore Girls, Dena on Samantha Who? and is currently the female lead on CBS' Mike & Molly. But earlier this year, she hit pay dirt when she played Megan in the film Bridesmaids. Her hilarious turn as Kristen Wiig's blunt and sometimes inappropriate gal-pal was comedic gold. Over the past 12 months, McCarthy has hosted Saturday Night Live, earned a SAG nomination and won a Primetime Emmy.

Michael Fassbender

2. Michael Fassbender

As an actor, Michael Fassbender lets it all hang out -- literally. He gives 100 percent in every role he plays and it shows. The actor has appeared in five films this year including X-Men: First Class and Steve McQueen's Shame, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. But it doesn't stop there. In 2012, Fassbender will appear in Ridley Scott's Prometheus as well as Steven Soderbergh's action flick Haywire. Thanks to his talent, Irish charm and good looks, he was also named one of GQ's Men of the Year.

Jessica Chastain

1. Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain worked hard for her money in 2011. The actress appeared in seven films, including favorites like The Help, Take Shelter and The Tree of Life. She's earned Golden Globe, Critics' Choice and SAG nominations for her work, so an Oscar nod can't be too far behind. Every role Chastain's played has been drastically different from the next. So, what's her secret? She has acting range. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Movie review: Haywire

$

Not since the invention of James Bond have we seen a spy with so much complexity -- and a woman to boot! SheKnows loves Haywire for that and so much more.

Haywire

The title doesn't do this film justice. Haywire is a fast-paced action thriller about a female spy on the run to win her life back. Mallory, played by former martial arts pro Gina Carano, is decisive, calculating and fights like Jean-Claude Van Damme .

Watch out Angelina Jolie, you've got competition

Carano is a student of martial arts. And, it's not only fun to watch her fight for emotional reasons tied to the story, but her technique is one of a champion. With excellent precision, it's clear that she could snap your neck with the twist of her thighs and she's got everyone this side of the state department trying to lure her back home.

Haywire cast ducks as Gina Carano kicks booty >>

The performance is subtle, and the audience is never quite clear what her character is thinking. Carano reminds us of a cross between Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor and Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft. She's got enough femme power to carry a movie.

The sexy men of Haywire

Haywire

Somehow, though, the men in this movie can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that she's a person to take seriously. Very seriously. She is lethal, and there's nothing they can do about it.

Ewan McGregor plays Kenneth, her boss and ex-boyfriend. When he sends her on a mission only a notch shadier than he is, Mallory starts to wonder if this isn't all a set up. After meeting, and falling for fellow spy Aaron, played by Channing Tatum, it's clear she's chosen the wrong ally in her fight for freedom.

And, that's just the beginning of the complicated plot web that is Haywire. Michael Douglas plays the suit, Michael Fassbender plays the job and Antonio Banderas plays the negotiator. You're never quite sure whose side you should be on, and that's half the fun.

A tense, thrilling action flick

Haywire

Steven Soderbergh's directing is crisp, clean and to the point. The sober nature of Contagion stayed with him in this production, and he's now all but lost that Ocean's Eleven glam from his earlier days. Despite recent trends to have sweeping musical scores in action films, Soderbergh tries something different. Less music. More controlled sound effects. The outcome is effective. Silence adds tension.

If you like female action movies like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Salt, Kill Bill and Underworld, you'll love the girl power aspect of this movie. But never fear if femme power isn't enough to get you into the theater. If you're a fan of edgy espionage films like vintage James Bond or The Bourne Identity, Haywire brings it on every level.

Bottom line: Don't miss Steven Soderbergh's Haywire and the new action hero that is Gina Carano, the female spy with a killer scissor kick… literally!

5 Jaw-dropping Oscar snubs

$
0
0
The Oscars have done it again. Tuesday morning, the 2012 Academy Award nominations were announced and filled with blatant omissions. Ryan Gosling? Nowhere to be found. Michael Fassbender? Missing in action. Steven Spielberg? Never heard of him. Here are some of the year's biggest, and most jaw-dropping snubs.

2012 Oscar nomination snubs

Michael Fassbender for Best Actor

Michael Fassbender bared his soul in Steve McQueen's Shame, and has nothing to show for it. Yes, he has a Golden Globe nomination, but it pales in comparison to an Oscar. Fassbender was one of the frontrunners to earn a spot in the Best Actor category, but was edged out by two dark horses -- Demian Bichir and Gary Oldman. It's not a question of Fassbender's talent, but a matter of timing. Apparently, the Academy needed to give Oldman some overdue props.

Ryan Gosling for Anything

What happened to the year of Ryan Gosling? Over the past 12 months, the actor appeared in three stellar films, with notable performances in each. Drive, The Ides of March and Crazy, Stupid, Love showcased Gosling's range and proved that he's an actor who lives up to the hype. Unfortunately,  during the voting process he got lost in the shuffle and walked away with nothing. With a plethora of performances to choose from, how does that happen?

The complete 2012 Oscar nominations list>>

Steven Spielberg and David Fincher for Best Director

Has the world gone mad? War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both had their fair share of problems, but you can't deny their amazing direction. Spielberg and Fincher's executions were flawless. Oddly enough, War Horse earned a Best Picture nod, but couldn't crack the Best Director category for Spielberg. Doesn't that seem strange? These exclusions feel unfair and slightly criminal.

The Adventures of Tintin for Best Animated Feature

This year's Animated Feature category had us scratching our heads. The Adventures of Tintin, which Steven Spielberg directed, was completely shut out. The Academy nominated Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, Rango and the lesser-known A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita. Nothing against the latter two, but Tintin was a cinematic accomplishment for multiple reasons. Its special effects, voice cast and direction were top notch, plus it had a great story. What's not to love?

Will Reiser and 50/50 for Best Original Screenplay

We were more than excited to see Bridesmaids' nomination for Best Original Screenplay but saddened by 50/50's absence. Will Reiser's retelling of his personal battle with cancer was inspiring and unique. He did the unthinkable by taking a painful experience and turning it into a comedy. His story was original in every sense of the word. Its omission is a huge oversight.

Charlize Theron likes Michael Fassbender's junk

Charlize Theron is a single mama who's ready to mingle. Theron's first target? Her Prometheus co-star, Michael Fassbender and his ample assets.

Charlize Theron loves Michael Fassbender's penis

Charlize Theron might be a new mom, but that doesn't mean she doesn't crave a little alone time — if you know what we mean . The Snow White and the Huntsman actress accepted an Ally For Equality Award during the Human Rights Campaign gala on Saturday night, but the only thing she could thank was actor Michael Fassbender's — ahem— member.

"I have to say that I was truly impressed that you chose to play it big," she joked to the actor, referring to his constant onscreen nudity in last year's Shame. "Most other actors would have gone small, trust me. I know because I've worked with them."

And that wasn't all.

"Your penis was a revelation,"Theron continued. "I'm available to work with it any time."

The pair co-starred together in the upcoming sci-fi epic Prometheus, and it's obvious they grew close during filming, hence all the wiener talk. We could totally get behind them dating — she dated another actor, Stuart Townsend, for nearly 10 years before they broke up in 2010.

Also, Fassbender likes to get it in at work — he dated hisX-Men co-star, Zoe Kravitz, in 2011 and is rumored to be seeing his Shame co-star, Nicole Beharie. The two were spotted arm-in-arm in NYC's SoHo last week.

His potential mates can relax, though — he's not the crazy sex addict he portrays in the indie flick.

"I was a bit worried that I'd perhaps bitten off more than I could chew," he told The Hollywood Reporter recently. "But I'm always interested in trying to investigate different personalities. I want to keep myself guessing and keep the fear element alive, so that I don't get too comfortable."

We have to agree with Charlize: Just keep taking those kind of roles, Michael.

Prometheus movie review: Move over HAL and Siri

In the ancient Greek myth, Prometheus is the Titan who steals fire from the gods, giving humans power they were never meant to have. In this skillful work of science fiction that includes one radically rogue robot, director Sir Ridley Scott explores the biggest question of all time -- how did we get here?

Prometheus in cavePrometheus dramatically opens with a stunning creation myth -- a human-like creature, porcelain white with vibrating muscles, stands on the edge of a rocky cliff. Opening a small orb, he drinks its inky contents before diving into the raging river beneath him. His body literally rips apart making his red blood cells, then the molecules of his DNA, splash through the water possibly seeding earth with what may become human life.

Cut to the year 2089, where two archeologists, Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway, study the ancient cave paintings of a man pointing to a cluster of stars. Once this cluster of stars is proven to exist in a galaxy far, far away, they team up with mega-corporation Weyland Industries for a two-year journey to "meet their makers" -- for better or worse.

Shaw , wears a cross around her neck and hopes to confirm her more traditional religious belief in a single "creator." While her boyfriend Holloway is more skeptical, he's still excited to find any answers to humanity's oldest questions.

Once onboard the mega-ship Prometheus, we meet Weyland Industries exec Meredith Vickers . She is terse, agile and has a mechanical coldness only briefly warmed up by the gorgeous ship's Captain Janek , who accuses her of being an actual robot. Turns out she's flesh and blood, perhaps even regretfully so in her mind.

The icy Vickers is mirrored by her artificially intelligent assistant David version 8 , who could be her electronic twin brother. David , like all robots in fiction, longs to be human and watches Lawrence of Arabia over and over, trying on Peter O'Toole's dialogue and styling. And, like all robots in fiction, David version 8 has a sinister plan for the humans onboard the spaceship.

Prometheus Charlize TheronThe movie really gets going, however, once the crew reaches their destination and goes off to explore in sleek Neoprene space suits. Inside an alien-made structure, the scientists see ghost-like images of simian-style creatures, stampeding from some unseen threat. When they get their hands on a decapitated alien, they hook its head up to a contraption seemingly thought up by Dr. Frankenstein and the head comes to life -- for a short, painfully disturbing moment, before exploding into a green, soupy mess.

Could this puddle of genetic material be one of humanity's engineers? If so, what was he running from? The space team finds out soon enough, when they are attacked by serpent-like aliens who are desperate to slither into any and all human orifices. Ew!

Prometheus asks more questions than it answers, but delivers on top-notch sci-fi action sequences, boldly going where no filmmaker has gone before. The CGI of celestial orbs and alien-scapes are truly beautiful and inspiring, just as the bleak, lowly aliens are truly repulsive. Most shocking of all is the scene where Elizabeth Shaw crawls into an automated surgery booth and gives herself a cesarean section, birthing a hideous alien-baby no mother could love.

Prometheus alien sphereBottom line:  Prometheus is an imaginative, frightening and entertaining full-service work of science fiction that includes the bold female characters Ridley Scott is famous for bringing to film. Perhaps not quite as iconic as 2001: A Space Odyssey or Scott's own Alien, but a must-see in 3-D. Enjoy!

Man Candy Mondays: Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender isn't a beefy muscleman. He's not hyper-masculine. He doesn't have long, flowing Samson locks or a super-hetero beard. But we want him. So badly. Like, now. Who is this guy, and why are we so attracted to him? Good question, actually. True, we watched him strip down to nothing in the sex thriller Shame and spank Keira Knightley while playing Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method. Now, he's made the leap to inarguable leading man in the summer blockbuster Prometheus. But despite his previous roles, one very specific thing speaks volumes about Michael Fassbender: In what is probably the most ringing endorsement of anyone's sex appeal ever, he's on many fans' short lists to play Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Yep. He's sexy, all right.

This stud strips away our inhibitions

Why we love him

This Irish-German fox snuck up on us after a series of minor roles in major films. And we're so glad he did!

Michael Fassbender

Born: April 2, 1977

Hometown: Heidelberg, Germany

Height: 6'

His sex appeal is so raw, it's almost scary

"Really Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man, do it!"

Getting an eyeful of Fassy's generous package in Shame caused quite the stir among filmgoers — even George Clooney, who remarked at the Golden Globes, “I would like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal nude responsibly that I had. Really Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man, do it!"

But the size of what he has to offer isn't the sole reason why we find Michael so attractive. The way a man carries himself — particularly this man — goes farther toward stoking our imagination than physical endowment. Still, we're not exactly, um, disappointed by what he's packing.

GQ asked him what he makes of all of the fuss over that very specific body part of his:

"It's fun to a point... and after a certain point you worry that it kind of detracts from the movie. But there's nothing I can do. I just have to laugh it off. I can. Pretty much. Because I take my work seriously but I can't take myself too seriously. I'm in such a crazy privileged position — s***, this is the pinnacle of the dream when I was 17... Nobody wants to hear really how difficult it is."

Pardon us while we let the idea of a well-endowed, attractive and humble man wash over us. Ahhhh.

Michael Fassbender

He might take on the character of Christian Grey

A few very vocal Fifty Shades of Grey enthusiasts won't rest until Fassy is cast as Christian Grey in the tale's film component. There's even a Facebook page titled "Michael Fassbender for Christian Grey."

Tell us: Who do you think should play Christian Grey? Share your pick in the comments below!

Says one fan about Fassy's potential to be Grey: "Christian Grey is a man filled with demons from a dark past. He is best left to the one man who could play him without resorting to cliché or textbook acting techniques. Fans want a Christian who is bold, damaged and believable. It’s a task for Michael Fassbender. No pretty boy will do."

He plays superheroes as well as he does academics

He breathed life into the comic book character Magneto in last year's X-Men: First Class, and he's currently saving the planet onscreen in the sci-fi flick Prometheus. But he's also lent us an indelible image of psychoanalyst Carl Jung and embodied a sex addict named Brandon in Shame.

“I must admit — I initially thought it might be fun,"he told W about Shame. "You hear ‘sex,’ and you think… sex! But this was definitely the hardest job I’ve done. I can usually shake a character off, but I couldn’t shake Brandon. He had no sensual enjoyment in his life, and since we filmed the movie so quickly, I found myself living in his skin. Keeping him close to me was exhausting, cold, horrible. As Brandon, I never ate. He had one container of Chinese food in his fridge. All that sex and he didn’t have any pleasure.”

“That sad container of noodles tells you more about Brandon than any nudity.”

"That sad container of noodles tells you more about Brandon than any nudity."

We love it when our pieces of man candy come infused with a little bit of depth.

Michael Fassbender's relationship status:

Nicole Beharie and Michael Fassbender

Dipping his pen in the company ink, Fassbender recently said he is now dating his Shame costar, relatively unknown actress Nicole Beharie, 27, known for her roles in American Violet and The Good Wife.

But forget any notion of clandestine meetings after shooting: "Nothing happened while we were filming,"he told GQ. "We started talking more on the promotion thing. So, yeah, it just sort of unfolded like that."

Nothing like a nice romantic surprise after a bout of hard work.

Top 5 summer celeb hookups we'd like to see

'Tis the season for summer flings. With that in mind, we started thinking about who among the Hollywood elite we’d like to see hook up as the weather heats up. Take a look at our top picks and feel free to weigh in with your own in the comments!
1

Prince Harry and Blake Lively

Prince Harry and Blake Lively

We know she’s firmly in loved-up relationship mode with cutie Ryan Reynolds, but can you just picture the queen’s face when she opens the paper one morning to see the headline, Blake Lively caught sneaking out of Prince Harry’s window? OK, the queen probably doesn’t know who Blake Lively is, but she and Harry would be a fun summer fling simply based on the fact that they’re evenly matched esthetically, and she’s about as all-American as you can get.

2

Michael Fassbender and Demi Moore

Michael Fassbender and Demi Moore

The Hollywood hot commodity is still riding high from his critically acclaimed performance in Shame, and he received rave reviews for his role in the deep space flick Prometheus. So basically, he’s riding high. Demi needs a pick-me-up. Her career has been on the downturn for a while, and let’s not forget the embarrassment Ashton Kutcher caused her when his cheating ways were splashed all over the tabloids. He’s hot; she’s still got it -- it’s a fling made in summer heaven. Not to mention how great these two would be for gossip.

3

Zac Efron and Taylor Swift

Zac Efron and Taylor Swift

Swift was burned by John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal in the past and she kind of, sort of, went on that one date with Taylor Lautner. She’s been linked to a few others, but before she falls in love again, we think she needs to cleanse her palate with a good, old fashioned summer fling. Why not Zac Efron? They’re both adorable, around the same age and like the two most popular kids in school. It just makes sense for them to hook up.

4

Halle Berry and Colin Farrell

Halle Berry and Colin Farrell

She’s been with Olivier Martinez for a while, but should that abruptly end in the next few weeks, we think Colin Farrell would be a great choice for a hot summer hookup. He’s changed his playboy ways, while she seems to have amped up her craziness in the past few years , so these two might just balance each other out. Plus, they’re both ridiculously good looking.

5

Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson

Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson

This one might seem out-of-the-box, but that’s exactly what a good fling should be -- something you might not have expected. She might be dating some advertising dude and he’s got a new model on his arm , but we think these two would be a great hot weather hookup. They’re matched in looks and pedigree, plus she probably still needs to shake off the ick-factor from last year’s brief dalliance with Sean Penn and who better to help than DiCaprio?

X-Men: Days of Future Past gets a cast

The announcement of a new X-Men film was exciting enough, but now we know who will be in the film, thanks to Twitter.

Jennifer Lawrence will be in new X-Men movie

The next X-Men film just got a little better with the addition of returning stars from different parts of the series' lifetime. X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently in production. Director Bryan Singer, who also directed X-Men and X2, announced the casting on Twitter.

"I'd like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, & Nicholas Hoult to #XMEN for#DaysOfFuturePast," he tweeted on Tuesday.

He then added a couple more additions, which will undoubtedly make for an interesting storyline.

"Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come...," tweeted Singer.

In 2011's X-Men: First Class, McAvoy and Fassbender played the younger versions of Xavier and Magneto. With Stewart and McKellen playing the older versions of the same characters, it could mean the new movie has a storyline that, in a change from the previous films, includes flashbacks.

Neither McKellen nor Stewart have been in an X-Men movie since 2006's X-Men: Last Stand.

The makers of the new film may have a challenge on their hands as they work with the actors' schedules, since many of the younger stars have gained popularity since the last film. Jennifer Lawrence is currently filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and there is a good chance she will be making the awards show circuit early next year for Silver Linings Playbook. James McAvoy is currently working on up to five other projects, including a film about Wikileaks' Julian Assange. Michael Fassbender is working on The Counselor along with Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and others. He will also begin filming Prometheus 2 in the near future.

Sir McKellen is of course in the middle of the production of The Hobbit trilogy, and Stewart also is working on multiple projects.

According to Box Office Mojo, X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to be released on July 18, 2014. It should begin filming early in 2013.

Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage signs on for X-Men

The Emmy-winning actor, best known for his role Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones, is officially part of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Peter Dinklage at the Emmys

Peter Dinklage as Puck!

That's what fanboys worldwide are praying after the news that the actor, most famous for his leading role on Game of Thrones, is to join director Bryan Singer's X-Men revamp.

"Officially like to welcome #PeterDinklage from #GameOfThrones to #XMEN #DaysofFuturePast Very very excited!" tweeted Singer Wednesday.

One fan tweeted back "@BryanSinger This cast so far is INSANE!"

Gotta agree with him there. Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page, Patrick Stewart and now Peter Dinklage? Yes, please. Cast = insane.

Not to mention that Bryan Singer was the director of the first two X-Men movies — a.k.a. the good X-Men movies — so possibly Singer can wrestle Days of Future Past into something satisfying.

Anyway, Singer didn't mention in his tweet what role Dinklage will play, but most assume it'll be Puck, whom Entertainment Weekly describes as "a strapping adventurer who found his physical stature shrunk by mystical forces — making him smaller, but no less of a forceful fighter."

Man Candy Mondays: Michael Fassbender>>

Entertainment Weekly also pointed out that MODOK is "another smallish Marvel character whose size belies his chaos-causing prowess as a villain."

EW made a good point, though, in noting that the role Dinklage plays needn't necessarily correspond with his physical stature: "This star of The Station Agent and Game of Thrones has personality that transcends his height, and could being energy and charm to just about [any] character — good, evil, or in-between — that Singer hands him."

May we point out that Dinklage can play both menacing and hilarious. Did you see him on 30 Rock as the love interest Liz Lemon met when she assumed he was a child on seeing him from behind and rumpled his hair?

How about Dinklage's turn as an inhumanly arrogant children's book author in Elf?

This movie sounds great. Now all we need is full frontal nudity from Michael Fassbender to make it perfect. Do you suppose that'll be a problem?

Are you excited for the latest X-Men?

From legends like Liam Neeson to newcomers like Aidan Turner, hot and talented actors grow like four-leaf clovers in Ireland. In honor of St. Paddy's Day, we pay tribute to the expats we'd like to get lucky with.
Colin Farrell

Magically Delicious

From legends like Liam Neeson to newcomers like Aidan Turner, hot and talented actors grow like four-leaf clovers in Ireland. In honor of St. Paddy's Day, we pay tribute to the expats we'd like to get lucky with.

Colin Farrell

From Tigerland to Seven Psychopaths, Dublin native Colin Farrell has proven he can do drama, comedy and everything in between. And did you see him as renegade Jesse James in American Outlaws? Yummy.

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender is a cross-continental hottie! Born to a German father and an Irish mother, the Prometheus star grew up in the town of Killarney, County Kerry, in southwest Ireland before moving to London.

Robert Sheehan

Robert Sheehan

County Laois native Robert Sheehan first caught our attention in 2011 for his starring role alongside Nicolas Cage in Season of the Witch. Sure, the movie wasn't that great, and Cage was characteristically bad, but this fine lad was the film's saving grace — if it had one.

Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy

He terrorized Rachel McAdams on a plane in Red Eye and sprayed people with hallucinogens while wearing a burlap bag on his head in The Dark Knight, and we still thought Cork-born actor Cillian Murphy was sexy. Apparently, nothing can deter us from drooling over this guy.

Aidan Turner

Aidan Turner

If you don't recognize Aidan Turner from his role as Mitchell on Being Human, you'll soon know the Dublin native as Kili — the youngest dwarf of Bilbo's posse in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Damien Rice

Damien Rice

What's sexier than a man who can sing? An Irishman who can sing, that's what — particularly when that man is Damien Rice, the guy behind hits like "The Blower's Daughter" and "Cannonball." It's also worth noting that he plays guitar, piano, clarinet and percussion — meaning he's good with his hands. Need we say more?

Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Born in Dublin like Colin Farrell and raised in Cork like Cillian Murphy, The Tudors actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers is further proof that Ireland is a breeding ground for bona fide hotties. His devil-may-care attitude — both on screen and off — proves to be impossibly appealing.

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan

Hot. Smokin' hot. Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan — who grew up in Navan, County Meath, in Ireland — ages like a fine wine. Plus, his complete devotion to real-life wife Keely Shaye Smith is oh-so sweet and endearing.

Domhnall Gleeson

Domhnall Gleeson

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, producers conjured up a cutie with Domhnall Gleeson as Ron's brother, Bill. By far the most handsome of his fam in the flick, Gleeson brought sex appeal to the Weasley brood.

Stuart Townsend

Stuart Townsend

Ever since Charlize Theron called off her long-time relationship with Stuart Townsend, we've been wishing on our lucky stars that her loss might be our gain. It could happen, right? OK, if not, we'd settle for him hitting the big screen more often.

Jamie Dornan

Jamie Dornan

Why, oh why, did Irishman Jamie Dornan's stint as Sheriff Graham on Once Upon a Time have to be so short-lived? We were so enjoying pining over Keira Knightley's hunky ex, until even Queen Regina had to go and pulverize his heart. Literally. Boo!

Liam Neeson

Liam Neeson

T-shirts have been made advertising the awesomeness of Liam Neeson — and people actually wear them. This fine Irish specimen evokes actor worship from audiences all over the globe, and rightly so. Few "mature" dudes can kick a** the way he did in Taken.

Danny O'Donoghue

Danny O'Donaghue

Much like Damien Rice, Irish singer-songwriter Danny O'Donoghue simply needs to sing a few chords and we're like putty in his able Irish hands. As the lead singer of The Script, O'Donoghue croons — and makes us swoon — on songs like "Breakeven."

Kevin Ryan

Kevin Ryan

How fortunate for us that award-winning Irish actor Kevin Ryan decided not to follow in an impressive eight generations of family footsteps as a stonecutter and opted instead to pursue a career in entertainment! Look for him this year as RJ in the horror film Sara's Cell.

Bono

Bono

We aren't drawn to Bono solely for the fact that he fronts über-famous rock band U2 or for the fact that he is a stone-cold fox. Those things don't hurt, of course. What we really love about the singer, though, is his big heart. His humanitarian work is widely lauded — he was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.
